Through the Big Ten Academic Alliance I took Informatics for Emergency and Disaster Management at Indiana University. There, I met Professor David Wild. I loved learning about user centered design while focusing on emergency and disaster management. I soon discovered that Professor Wild was a co-founder of the Crisis Technologies Innovation Lab, and I told him I would be thrilled for a chance to work on projects there with the team.
Since October 2020, I have been working on the GoTenna Mesh Networking Project. We are working with GoTenna devices to learn the best ways to implement a mesh network in asset tracking and search and rescue scenarios. I have assisted on interviewing emergency response practitioners and academics researching these topics. We have learned a lot about the potential for these devices as well as the limitations. Our team has met with the stakeholders and we are presenting our findings from the interview process in the near future. The next steps include prototyping hardware to reduce the failure of the mesh network due to weather or vegetation and publishing our findings. I love being a part of this team, and exploring the intersection of crisis management and user experience design is what I hope to spend my career doing.
